Dorking Swimming Club

Events Explained

For each stroke there is a number of events that can be done. There are very strict rules from FINA for each stroke and event.

When entering galas / meets / club champs, the swimmers should be trying to fill out their PB sheet and aim to update their times at least once a year.

Open Galas/Meets

Open galas/meets are individual competitions, but may also contain relay events.

Swimmers and parents must ensure that they submit their entries in line with our own internal deadline which will be communicated by the membership secretary and posted on the TeamUnify. There are many types of individual entry galas suitable for different levels of swimmer. Usually the qualifying times will be the best indication of the type of gala and you will be able to judge by comparing these to the PB sheet whether to enter that particular competition.

Ensure that you read the entry details and see if the competition is appropriate by checking qualifying times against your PBs. You can download the PB sheet from the members area or find them on the Swim England website.

Team Galas

We compete in the Junior Arena League, Arena League and also attend other team galas. The swimmers for all team galas are selected by either the Team Manager or Head Coach. You do not need to complete individual entries for these galas and there is no charge. We always need lots of help organising these events so if your child is swimming your help would be very much appreciated.

This Arena league competitions are run on a national basis. We are in the "South Region" which has three divisions:
  • Premier
  • Division 1
  • Division 2

The leagues are held across three galas; Junior galas, tend to be May, June and July, and Arena League in October, November and December. The programme for the Arena League gala is the same and ages for competition are as at the end of the year (i.e. to be an U12 you must not turn 12 before the 31st December of the year of competition).
